English definitions are built in. French, Spanish, Portuguese, Italian and German definition packs and translation packs are downloaded separately when selected. This page credits the sources used by those language resources; the app also shows source and license information.
The current English, French, Spanish, Portuguese, Italian and German definition and translation data is derived from the corresponding language editions of Wiktionary, © Wiktionary contributors. English source data is from the 2026-09-02 dump; French and Spanish, Portuguese, Italian and German source data is from the 2026-09-01 dumps. Extraction dates are September 23 for Portuguese, September 28 for Italian and September 27 for the other editions, recorded per pack in the catalog. Data was extracted by Kaikki / Wiktextract.
Wiktionary entry text is dual-licensed under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 4.0 International License (CC BY-SA 4.0) and the GNU Free Documentation License (GFDL). See the Wiktionary copyright notice for the source terms.
Structured data was extracted with Wiktextract, by Tatu Ylonen, “Wiktextract: Wiktionary as Machine-Readable Structured Data”, Proceedings of LREC 2022. Booktionary filtered language sections and restructured selected definitions, forms, and translation relations into separate SQLite files. The data has been modified. The pack catalog records the source editions, dump and extraction dates, license, and checksum for each file. Version 1.0.6 offers English-source translations into French, Spanish, Portuguese, Italian and German. Earlier directions among English, French and Spanish remain hosted for compatibility with older app versions. Italian heading-only definitions are cleaned or recovered from native sense labels; German source-confirmed spelling aliases are retained. Explicit equivalents are preferred for Italian and German.
The Portuguese definition pack includes form-to-lemma relations from PortiLexicon-UD, revision 315e063da1f89c89e2097c6e72428ebefb9ab1d1, copyright 2023 Lucelene Lopes. This supplement is distributed under the MIT License. Its full license notice is included in the app and hosted here. Booktionary normalized and filtered these relations against the Portuguese dictionary.
The expanded resources use a separate catalog. The original catalog and previously released files remain available for older app versions. English definitions remain built in; other definition and translation packs are separate, optional downloads. Publishing these data files does not change the languages available in the current App Store version.
Additional native definitions and source-recorded forms credit the contributors to Dutch, Russian, Polish, Czech, Japanese, Chinese, Thai, Vietnamese, Turkish, Korean, Ukrainian, Kurdish (Kurmanji) and Malay Wiktionary. Malay includes the reviewed buku source revision. The separate English-source translation packs credit English Wiktionary contributors; Chinese Wiktionary English sections also supply English-to-Chinese equivalents. Wiktionary text uses the CC BY-SA 4.0/GFDL terms above. Exact source editions, versions and file checksums are recorded in the catalog.
Swedish Wiktionary and Indonesian Wiktionary data was extracted by Gilles Sérasset and the GETALP team through DBnary, licensed under CC BY-SA 3.0. Booktionary filtered and restructured definitions and unambiguous source forms; the data has been modified.

Normative forms come from the Danish Language Council's COR₁ 1.5.1.0 (Det Centrale Ordregister), whose base register is free and open for any use. Booktionary linked unique source-confirmed forms and restructured the definitions; all source senses remain present, with a reviewed common-sense ordering for selected entries.

Booktionary linked native senses and unambiguous source-confirmed forms, normalized spacing, replaced WordNet underscores with spaces, and reordered senses for 29 reviewed headwords; the data has been modified. Adapted definition and morphology source is distributed under CC BY-SA 4.0. RoWN is aligned to Princeton WordNet 3.0; see WordNet license and commercial-use terms. No DEX definition data or noncommercial RoLEX/CoRoLa lexicon is included.
English-to-Romanian and English-to-Greek translations remain separate Wiktionary-based resources.
The French dictionary in app versions before the on-demand language release also used Morphalou 3.1 (ATILF / ORTOLANG), distributed under the LGPL-LR license. Morphalou is not included in the current French download pack.
